I’ve been using Screencast-O-Matic for about three years now to help teach Computer Science at the community college level. My students love it. I find a small Java program and put it up on my laptop’s screen and then carefully talk through it with the camera rolling. The cursor is highlighted with a yellow halo so that the students know exactly which feature of the Java code I’m talking about. The result is an .mp4 video which the students can play as many times as they like until they understand the code I’m trying to teach. This is very helpful to the slower students because I can’t repeat myself enough to satisfy them in the classroom without “turning off” the faster students. Also, Screencast-O-Matic is invaluable for on-line classes.
Screencast-O-Matic should be renamed Screencast-O-Magic! An easy tool to use to create screencapture videos and tutorials. A basic editor makes it simple to remove the sound of your cat meowing in the background or a plane going over head. : ) It also has captioning feature – a must for accessibility. Often this tool is used for instruction but it is a great tool for students to use as well. They can make their own presentations (voice over slideshows or anything on their screen) of course but there are some really interesting ways to use this tool to support peer review. research projects, and much, much more. Students like using video as it is a much more native way for them to learn and share information.
