Criterion Overview

Students are more likely to engage in a course when they feel connected to the instructor. Introducing yourself helps establish instructor presence by creating a more welcoming and supportive learning environment while demonstrating that an active instructor is guiding the course.

An instructor introduction can take many forms, including a written welcome, introductory video, course tour, welcome announcement, or other activities that allow students to learn about the instructor's background, teaching philosophy, interests, or enthusiasm for the subject. These introductions help humanize the online learning experience and encourage students to seek support when needed.

Instructor presence extends beyond the first week of class. Regular announcements, personalized feedback, and ongoing communication reinforce the connection established during the course introduction and contribute to a positive learning experience throughout the semester.

Why It Matters

Students often begin an online course without ever meeting their instructor. Providing an opportunity to get to know the instructor helps establish trust, reduces the sense of isolation that can occur in online learning, and encourages students to participate more actively throughout the course.
