Authentic assessments measure meaningful learning by asking students to apply knowledge, demonstrate skills, solve problems, and communicate their thinking in ways that reflect real-world practice. While traditional assessments, such as quizzes and exams, effectively measure foundational knowledge and understanding, authentic assessments require students to analyze, evaluate, create, and apply what they have learned in meaningful contexts. Projects, case studies, portfolios, presentations, simulations, performances, and other applied learning experiences provide richer evidence of student learning because they mirror how knowledge and skills are used beyond the classroom.

Authentic assessments are most effective when scaffolded into smaller learning experiences that support continuous improvement. Activities such as proposals, drafts, reflections, peer review, progress checkpoints, presentations, and revisions provide opportunities for students to receive feedback, refine their work, and deepen their understanding before completing a final assessment.

As generative AI and other digital tools become more widely available, thoughtful assessment design is increasingly important. Rather than relying solely on detection tools or restrictive policies, instructors can promote academic integrity by designing assessments that require students to demonstrate original thinking, explain their reasoning, apply concepts to authentic situations, and document their learning process. When expectations for AI use are clearly communicated and assessments emphasize authentic demonstration of learning, students are more likely to engage honestly and meaningfully with course content.
