Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI) 2015-2016 LEARNING GRANTS
Academic year 2015-2016 will be the fifteenth year of the Maricopa Community College District Learning Grants program.
The program is designed to support:
- Innovative projects that are designed to enhance student learning, promote student success, and further innovation in teaching and learning.
- Projects on a one-time, one-year basis.
- Ideas and projects at the appropriate stage of development.
Qualifying proposals will range from formative ideas that explore learning concepts to fully tested models ready to be adopted and disseminated.
Who can Apply for Learning Grants?
- Faculty (residential, adjunct, and one-year-only) are eligible to apply.
- Adjunct faculty and one-year-only faculty should team up with a residential faculty member or department/division chair to provide an on-campus contact for the grant. Inclusion on a learning grant application does not guarantee future employment with Maricopa.
- Faculty may be compensated through special services assignments throughout the duration of the grant. Each college determines how to distribute the funds for faculty participating in the grant.

How Much Money is Available for a Grant?
Allocations are up to $12,000 per project, depending on project goals; types of activities and events proposed; resources required; degree of involvement of faculty, students, and administrators; and potential benefits to students.
Grant Preparation & Application:
Prior to submitting your grant proposal, you are required to discuss your project idea with your Vice President of Academic Affairs.You may also want to discuss your idea with your faculty development coordinator and department/diviaion chair.

In order to ensure that all learning grant proposals are received by the deadline, please email rob.morales@domail.maricopa.edu your learning grant proposal as a Microsoft Word document by the deadline. NOTE you must enable macros in order to complete the budget section of the proposal. Download the Proposal MS Word Template.

Maricopa Institute for Learning Research Fellowship 2015-2016
The MCLI is pleased to announce that applications for the redesigned 2015-2016 Maricopa Institute for Learning Research Fellowship (MILRF) are now being accepted.
What is the MILRF?
The MILRF is a fellowship for up to six residential faculty in any discipline who are interested in examining significant issues in their teaching fields and contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning through classroom research projects. Its secondary purpose is to create a community of scholars that will engage in conversations about the scholarship of teaching and learning.
This year’s program includes the following changes/additions:
- load hour increase (3 load hours during fall semester; 6 load hours during spring semester)
- year-long mentor support for Fellows
- summer compensation
- research boot camp
The Application Process & Deadlines
If you are interested in applying for the Fellowship, please review the attached material or the MILRF website at

You must submit an intent to apply request via email to your college VPAA by January 9, 2015 before you can apply. If your VPAA invites you to move forward, you can then complete the full application. Applicants will be asked to secure signed approvals from the college VPAA and department chair prior to the application deadline.

Description:
An Academic Impressions Webinar. Note: this session must be attended at the campus location specified. Users cannot attend virtually due to licensing agreements.
Research indicates approximately one-half of all incoming students need remedial work in at least one subject. While the majority of colleges offer developmental coursework, about 75% of students who enroll in these courses do not finish their degrees.
Join your colleagues and learn how Austin Peay State University redesigned their developmental courses using the Linked Workshop (or SLA) model. This redesign significantly increased student persistence rates and was recogniz ed by the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT).
What is the Linked Workshop (or SLA) Model?
This model provides remedial/developmental instruction by linking workshops that offer students just-in-time supplemental academic support to core college-level courses. The model also integrates supplementary instruction, tutoring, learning communities, and accelerated learning—all considered best practices in developmental coursework—into core college-level courses.

Academic leadership involved with coordinating and improving academic support and developmental or remedial programs will gain new ideas from this case study. More specifically, directors of developmental programs and directors of academic support programs including student success, learning, tutoring, or writing centers will brainstorm ideas for improving your support initiatives.

Adobe Connect Pilot at MCC this Fall
What is Adobe Connect?
Are you interested in conducting online live classroom sessions or office hours? Adobe Connect might be for you!
Adobe Connect is the premier resource for online live classroom and web conferencing solutions for eLearning and business applications. Their comprehensive product provides a safe platform for faculty to deliver virtual real-time class presentations and host office hours with features such as: screen and file sharing, video/audio capture, mobile device support, session recording, live polling and more! Call for Pilot Participants
MCCCD is currently looking for 25 faculty at each campus to pilot Adobe Connect for instructional applications (live classroom presentations, office hours, etc.) in the Fall 2014. Interested persons should complete the MCC Google Form for Join the Pilot.
Purpose of Pilot
This trial will help MCCCD determine if Adobe Connect can meet our live classroom needs and help us build a license and support structure for a district wide implementation. Pilot participants will be expected to provide feedback to the college on their experience with Adobe Connect via a survey and to attend a virtual meeting using Adobe Connect to learn the product.

Join us in the Mesa Community College Center for Teaching & Learning April 9-11, 2014 for the exciting VIRTUAL Emerging Technologies for Online Learning International Symposium (ET4Online) devoted to the emerging and innovative uses of technology designed to improve teaching and learning online.
On Wednesday, April 9 – Friday, April 11 head to the CTL Lobby (AS Building, Southern & Dobson Campus) daily to tune in to the live streamed conference sessions. Call for Nominations
Answer the Call for Innovations for the 2013-2014 Innovation of the Year Awards Program! The Maricopa Community Colleges and the League for Innovation in the Community College co-sponsor the annual Innovation of the Year (IOTY) Awards to recognize an employee or teams of employees who have designed and implemented a significant innovation that has had a positive impact on the education of students. One innovation is selected from each College and the District Office. From those winning innovations, a District-wide innovation will be selected to receive the Dr. Paul M. Pair Innovation of the Year Award, which includes $2,000 to be used to further the winning innovation.
All employees are invited to nominate innovative projects and programs that you have worked on over the past year. To get started, review the Innovation of the Year Program information and criterion on the website, http://mcli.maricopa.edu/innovate. Note: If you have previously submitted an innovation that may not have been selected to receive the Dr. Paul M. Pair Innovation of the Year Award, you are welcomed to resubmit. Then complete NEW online Innovation of the Year Nomination Form: mcli.maricopa.edu/innovate/apply to put in your submission.
Online nominations are due Friday, March 7, 2014.
The Process: A winning innovation team selected from each College and District Office will make a presentation to the Innovation of the Year Final Selection Committee on Friday, March 28, 2014, at the District Office. A review committee will identify the one innovation that will receive the 2013-2014 Maricopa Community Colleges Innovation of the Year and that will be the recipient of the Dr. Paul M. Pair Award.
The Celebration: All selected innovations will be celebrated at the Innovation of the Year Awards Program Reception that will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the Rio Salado College Conference Center.

Description: Night of Innovation is an opportunity to provide an innovative and collaborative environment for staff and faculty to join forces, knowledge, and resources for the purpose of enriching the quality of instruction through the use of technology. The spirit of ONE Maricopa will help drive the ideas and projects.
The first Night of Innovation kicks off with the Maker Party concept. Attendees will participate in a remix video activity and create something new to share on the interent. There will be guided instruction for those participants new to remixing content while experienced participants may form groups and start creating. Plan to stay the entire evening as dinner (pizza) will be provided.
Learning Objective:
Upon successful completion of the workshop, you will be able to:
- Define what it means to remix content
- Identify classroom applications for remixed activities
- Use web tools and resources from the internet to create a remixed video
- Collaborate with individuals across campuses to remix a video
- Showcase appropriate remixed on the MCLI Learning Technology webpage
- Create guides for faculty to repeat remix projects in the classroom
