Critical thinking requires learners to examine ideas from multiple perspectives, evaluate evidence, question assumptions, and recognize that complex issues often involve more than one reasonable interpretation. Well-designed learning activities encourage students to thoughtfully analyze information, compare viewpoints, and support conclusions using evidence appropriate to the discipline.

Encouraging students to examine alternative perspectives does not mean presenting every viewpoint equally or requiring instructors to teach controversial topics. Rather, it means helping learners develop the habits of mind expected within the discipline, such as evaluating evidence, recognizing assumptions, identifying potential bias, and understanding how context influences interpretation and decision-making.

Some disciplines naturally provide more opportunities for examining multiple perspectives than others. When course content appropriately focuses on a specific theory, methodology, historical period, author, or professional practice, instructors should provide context for those instructional choices and, when appropriate, encourage students to consider other relevant perspectives within the discipline.
